Continuing its community support, Top Energy funds the following educational, business, sporting and community sponsorships:
WaterSafe is a practical programme which teaches primary school children graduated, learn to swim and personal water survival skills. Managed by Sport Northland, the programme reached a unique milestone in its 12th consecutive season in 2009 – celebrating 100,000 lesson contacts with the region's children!
Interestingly, in that period, Northland's drowning statistics had reduced dramatically, especially for children less than 15 years of age. Whilst Top Energy and Sport Northland don't claim the WaterSafe Programme is directly responsible for this life saving reduction, they are certain the Programme has achieved remarkable results with the tens of thousands of children whose water survival skills have been improved.
In 2005, Top Energy's WaterSafe Programme was officially recognised by New Zealand's national water safety body, Watersafety New Zealand, as creating the benchmark for teaching children how to swim and keep safe around water, with a Merit Award. The following year, the WaterSafe Programme won the New Zealand Recreation Association's Outstanding Programme Award.
In November 2009, the WaterSafe programme won a New Zealand Water Safety Award in the Prevention category, the first time such an award has been presented.
